4. The importance of prayer
Earlier, it was mentioned that prayer is a step that shows we have fellowship with God. It has also been stated that we should all set time aside during the day for our personal prayer (Matthew 6:6) and we should be continually praying and talking to God at all times (1 Thessalonians 5:17). If you have not been able to read topic number 3 we recommend that it be read.
Let us quote some verses that show the advantages related to a life in obedience and prayer (a life of communion with God):
• It allows us to be alert and to not enter into the temptation of sin:
Mark 14:38
38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak.
• It helps us to stand firm in God's will:
Colossians 4:12
Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, always laboring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all that God wants.
• Prayer for others gives us inner healing (emotional) and physical:
James 5:15-16
15 And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up, and if he have committed sins will be forgiven.
16 Confess your faults to one another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man avails much.
• The prayer of the righteous has power:
James 5:16
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man avails much.
• God hears our prayers (those of the righteous):
1 Peter 3:12
For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, And His ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.
• Our requests will be answered (requests that are according to His will, James 4:3):
Matthew 21:22
And whatever you ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
• We will help our brothers:
Philippians 1:19
19 For I know that through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, this will result in my release,
- Now we will quote some verses that explain our attitude in prayer:
• We must be constant:
Romans 12:12
12 rejoicing in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer;
1 Peter 4:7
The end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
Colossians 4:2
2 Continue in prayer, watching therein with thanksgiving;
• We must pray for those who do not love us or curse us:
Luke 6:28
28 Bless them that curse you, pray for those who revile you.
• We must pray according to the Father, our requests have to be just and not unjust:
James 4:2-3
2 You lust, and you do not kill, and covet and can not obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 You ask and receive not, because ye ask amiss, get on your pleasures.
Conclusion
A life of prayer is a must for a Christian. We therefore should become aware of its importance primarily in our lives, the lives of those around us and for the life of the church. Prayer brings holiness and sanctification and it brings us closer to God.
